Ethical Dilemmas of Designer Babies (Pro) - Megan Kang


       In the past, doctors weren't able to cure the baby's genetic disease until the baby was born. Doctors could only detect certain genetic diseases or mutations a baby was going to have. However, recently doctors have been able to eliminate the chances of some genetic disease or mutation passing down to the baby. Theses genetic diseases and mutations are those that are formed because of mutations in the X and the Y chromosomes and passes down from one gender of the family to another of the same gender. Rather than allowing the genetic disease to carry on through out the family, the disease could potentially be eliminated from the family.




         Genetic Modifications would help scientists gain more knowledge that would help produce more effective pharmaceutical products . It would also help increase the lifespan of average human beings. Gene therapy for people with genetic diseases would have increased life spans as well as genetic modification for those who are healthy. The lifespan of 100 -150 years could be the norm.


      In conclusion, gene modification is beneficial for the human race. It is capable of curing genetic diseases and mutations, eliminating genetic diseases, producing more effective pharmaceutical products, and in the long run it would increase the lifespan of average human beings.

          In the DNA of the human body, there are three billion genetic base pairings which make up the genome, or genetic makeup of humans. In 1990, the NIH, or National Institutes of Health, and the Department of Energy joined with several other international companies and departments in order to link and sequence all the base pairings of the DNA, aptly naming this endeavor the Human Genome Project. In 2003, the sequencing of all the base pairings was successfully completed. 

          The main purpose of the Human Genome Project is to connect genes to diseases, in order to gain a better understanding of diseases and find more ways to diagnose, cure, and stop them. The HGP updated its progress on the Internet, attracting international interests and curious minds. Because of the HGP, a revolution in biotechnology has started, placing the United States in an important position in this field, and more than 1,800 disease- causing genes have been uncovered.
          Thanks to 13 years of hard work and dedication, the Human Genome Project has discovered more than 2,000 trials to test the conditions of the human gene, allowing patients to gain an understanding of their sickness and the doctor to find an efficient way to diagnose and treat it. Additionally, with all the base pairings sequenced, it'll take a shorter amount of time to trace diseases to genetic or hereditary factors, preventing any harmful progression  from the sickness. Also, the large sums of money needed to sequence genomes for other illnesses can be filtered into different medical projects, because all the DNA pairings of the human body are already sequenced. Lastly, doctors will be able to have a better scope of what kinds of medicines should treat the patient, based on their genes.


          In the future, the Cancer Genome Atlas, another genetic endeavor, will strive to discover the genetic problems in the more major and problematic cancer diseases, such as leukemia. Also, scientists are attempting to create more efficient drugs to cure diseases, based on genes. If it hadn't been for the ground-breaking data and DNA sequences from the Human Genome Project, none of these future plans would be as easily possible.

Ethical Dilemma of Genetically Modified Babies (CONS)

       A designer baby is an infant that has been genetically modified as an embryo. This grants a numerous amount of advantages, as lethal diseases can be avoided, disorders can be prevented, and the baby will have the chance to have a healthy life. However, the cons shouldn't be overlooked, as there is a large number of them, and each are accurate and pose as serious questions.
      The process to genetically modify the gene carried from the parent to the offspring takes place when it is an embryo, and is known as Inheritable Gene Modification. The technology needed for this to happen is only in an experimental phase right now, so it's unknown on how the gene pool will be affected. Geneticists will make mistakes when evaluating the gene, so it's possible that the desired outcome may not be attained.


          Since designer babies are meant to be modified, in order to avoid any flaws, it will be easy to detect them in society, by their intelligence and looks. This will create "classes" among the designer babies and the babies conceived normally. Furthermore, many people may not be able to afford the costly price for such a scientific venture, so another reason for the creation of "classes" will be eminent. Eventually, everyone will be "perfect" and nobody will carry the uniqueness of "difference." And the lines of ethnicities will be blurred, as this problem connects to the surge of Nazi eugenics in the 1940s.
                                      
          In conclusion, there are numerous problems to genetically modified babies. These shouldn't be taken lightly, whether it's the problem of technology or the conflicts between superficial "classes." Each con holds a lot of negative weight, and making a designer baby shouldn't take place without the consideration of these problems.

A current example is the possibility of designer babies, which this article discusses. In agriculture, companies like Monsanto use GMOs as their crop products, to enhance certain aspects or add nutritional values.

Embryo: A fertilized egg.

Gene: Hereditary information carried from the parent organism to the offspring by DNA. 

Designer Babies: Genetically modified babies. Due to gene modification, they are more intelligent, have better appearances, and are healthier. For now, only the sex of the baby can be chosen, but later on, more possibilities like hair color or life span can be determined.
